Radish Kofta Kadhi

Few days back, I came across this recipe on the net. I have never made koftas with radish. I found the recipe to be very different. Also, the koftas this recipe are steamed, not deep fried.

I was actually not very confident when I started making this dish but still went ahead hoping that it would come out well. And I was not at all disappointed.

The flavour of the kofta and the kadhi was very fresh, mild and delicious. The koftas were very soft too. All of us at home enjoyed this delicious kofta and kadhi with hot steaming rice:)

Ingredients

For the kofta
—————
Moong dal ( green gram/ Pasi paruppu) – 3/4th cup
Radish ( mooli/ mullangi ) – 2 ( medium sized)
Besan ( gram flour/ kadala maavu) – 3 tbsps
Green chill and ginger paste- 1 tsp
Salt to taste

For the kadhi
—————–
Yogurt – 1 + 1/2 cups
Water – 2+1/2 cups
Besan – 3 tbsps
Turmeric powder – 1/4th tsp
Salt to taste
Green chillies and ginger paste – 1+1/2 tsp
Ghee – 2 tsps
Cumin seeds ( jeera)- 1 tsp
Hing ( asafoetida/ perungayam) – 1/4th tsp
Coriander leaves – 1 tbsp

Method

To make the kofta
———————

Wash and soak moong dal for 3-4 hours. Drain well and grind to a coarse paste.

Wash, peel and grate the radish. Add little salt, mix well and rest for some time. The radish will release lot of water. Squeeze the radish well and keep it aside. Reserve the water ( it can be added to the Kadhi).

In a bowl, add the moong paste, radish, green chillies and ginger paste, besan and salt to taste. Mix well and keep it aside.

To make the kadhi
———————

In a bowl, add the yogurt, water, besan, turmeric powder, green chillies and ginger paste, reserve radish water and salt to taste. Mix well. Check for the seasonings.

Heat ghee in a pan. Add the cumin seeds. When it starts crackling, add the hing. Reduce the flame and add the yogurt besan mixture and stir well.

When the mixture starts to boil, take small portion of the moong radish batter, make a ball and drop it gently into the kadhi. Check if it breaks down ( in that case, add little more besan to the batter and mix well).
If it does not breakdown, then continue to make koftas and drop it into the kadhi.

Let it cook on a medium flame for 6-8 mins or till it’s cooked. Do not disturb the koftas while cooking.
