Gothsu is a spicy tamarind based gravy. It is a very traditional dish from Tamil Brahmin cuisine. It is generally served with ven pongal, a South Indian version of khichadi.
There are many varieties of gothsu recipe. Today am sharing my own recipe of gothsu.
My family is very fond of this dish. Hope that you all would like it too:)
Onion – 1 medium sized
Tomatoes – 2 medium sized
Tamarind- plum sized
Sambar powder- 2 tsps
Besan ( chickpea flour/ Kadalai maavu)- 21/2 tsps
Jaggery – 1 tsp
Oil – 1 tbsp
Mustard – 1 tsp
Spilt urad dal – 1 tsp
Jeera – 1/2 tsp
Curry leaves – few
Green chillies- 2
Salt to taste
Method
Soak tamarind in a cup of water for 15-20 mins. Squeeze well and take the extract.
Peel, wash and chop onions. Wash and chop tomatoes. Wash and slit green chilies.
Heat oil in a pan. Add mustard. When it starts spluttering, add split urad dal, jeera, curry leaves and green chillies. Sauté for few seconds and then add chopped onions.
Sauté for a min and then add tomatoes.
Add the tamarind extract, sambar powder, salt to taste and jaggery. Mix well and let it boil well for 10 mins.
Mix the besan in 1/4th cup of water well. There should be no lumps. Add this to the gravy and one more cup of water. Mix well and let it cook on medium flame for 10-12 mins.
Serve the gothsu hot with hot Pongal / idli/ dosa:)
Interesting recipe! Not sure if I’ve tried this before. I do eat Indian cuisine quite often here but I never know the names of those gravies or soups that I’d tried. I’m sure this tastes dynamite 🙂
Thank you:)
