Semolina in known as rava in Tamil and sooji in Hindi.
Rava Upma is one of my most favourite breakfast option. In fact, I can have it for any meal. It’s a very humble and a very commonly made breakfast in South India.
Though it’s very easy to make, one can easily go wrong in getting the right consistency.
Today am sharing with you all a fool proof recipe to make a delicious and a perfect rava Upma:)
Rava ( semolina) – 1 cup
Chopped onions – 1+1/2 cups
Salt to taste
Ghee – 2 tsps
For tempering
———————–
Oil – 1 tbsp
Mustard – 1 tsp
Split urad dal- 1 tsp
Chana dal ( Bengal gram/ kadalai paruppu) – 2 tsps
Asafoetida( hing/ perungayam) – 1/8th tsp
Curry leaves – few
Slit green chillies – 4
Method
Heat a heavy bottom pan. Add rava and dry roast till it becomes golden brown. Keep it aside.
Heat oil in the same pan. Add mustard. When it starts spluttering, add urad dal, chana dal, green chillies, hing and curry leaves.
Sauté for few seconds and then add chopped onions. Sauté till the onions turn pink.
Add 2 cups of water and salt to taste.
When water starts to boil, add the roasted rava little by little and stir simultaneously.
Keep stirring till there are no lumps. Reduce the flame, close the pan with a lid and cook till the rava becomes soft and dry.
Add ghee and mix well. Keep it closed for few mins.
Serve the Upma hot with pickle / sugar / yogurt/ chutney:)
