The day after Navrathri is celebrated as Dashahara or Vijayadashami.

Kama( lust), Krodha( anger), Moha( attachment), Lobha( greed), Mada( pride), Matsara( jealousy), Swartha( selfishness), Anyaaya( injustice), Amanavta( cruelty) and Ahankara ( ego) are the ten negative qualities within us.

Dashahara means defeat of these ten negative qualities and Vijayadashami means victory over these ten negative qualities.

Today I made a simple and delicious Aval Vazhaipazham Payasam as prasadam 🙂

Ingredients

Aval ( poha/ rice flakes ) – 1/4th cup
Vazhaipazham ( ripe banana ) – 1
Grated jaggery – 1/2 cup
Milk – 1 cup
Cardamom powder – 1/4th tsp
Ghee – 1 tbsp
Cashew nuts – 1 tbsp

Method

Wash and soak Aval in little water for 10-15 mins. Mash it and keep it aside.

Dissolve the jaggery in 1/4th cup of water completely and strain it to remove the dirt.

Boil the jaggery syrup till it becomes slightly thick. Add the mashed poha and mashed banana and mix well. Let it cook for few mins on a medium flame. Add milk, mix well and let it simmer for few more mins. Add the cardamom powder, mix well and take it off the gas.

Heat ghee in a pan. Add the cashew nuts and sauté till it turns golden.

Garnish the payasam with roasted nuts and serve it warm/ room temperature / chilled 🙂
